How do you diagnose ignition problems?

Here’s How To Diagnose Your Ignition Issues

  1. Verify Lack of Spark.
  2. Check for Any Obvious Issues.
  3. Probe for Power.
  4. Double-Check Firing Order.
  5. Double-Check Initial Timing.
  6. Test/Inspect Spark Plugs.
  7. Test Spark Plug Wires.
  8. Check for Spark at Coil.

How do you check a spark without a spark tester?

An alternative method to check if a spark plug is firing is to remove the spark plug from the engine. Plug the spark plug on your ignition coil. Ground the threaded part of the spark plug to the engine block. Crank the engine and see if you are noticing any spark at the spark plug tip.

What does a good ignition spark look like?

A good spark will be blue-white and will be plainly visible in daylight. If a good spark is present, the problem is probably not in the ignition system. Check the fuel system and/or stark timing. Weak sparks are orange or red and may be hard to see in daylight.

How can you tell if your car has an ignition problem?

If you’re noticing strange noises, accompanied by a poor response from the engine leading to jerks or vibration when idling, these can be tell-tale signs that the ignition coil is on its way out. In the worst case scenario this can lead to the car shutting down altogether, and stalling when you put your foot down on the gas.

What happens if your ignition coil is broken?

If the coil is broken however, this can lead to overheating, which will eventually crack the housing and the oil will start to leak out of the part. If you find that your spark plugs are faulty or worn out, then they can often draw more charge than is normally expected from the engine.

What kind of resistance does a pertronix ignitor need?

The Ignitor™ lead (red wire) can go directly to the ignition switch or any other “switched” source on the fuse panel. The coil will still need a minimum of 1.5 ohms of resistance, either internally such as the Flame-Thrower or in the form of a resistor wire or ballast resistor.
