  1. Pattern preliminaries. Be sure you have all the necessary pattern pieces.
  2. Spread out fabric carefully.
  3. Choose a cutting layout.
  4. With-nap layout, lengthwise fold.
  5. Without-nap layout, crosswise fold.
  6. Lengthwise double fold.
  7. Grainline and layout.
  8. Anchor the pattern to the fabric.

What side of the fabric where the pattern should be laid?

Grainlines Tell you what direction your pattern piece should be placed on your fabric. Your grain line is always parallel to the selvage. If your pattern piece should be lay lengthwise, crosswise or on the bias, the grainline will tell you (as well as the layout guide).

Pressing is important, so you should press your tissue pattern pieces prior to laying them on your fabric. Pattern pieces usually have creases in them, as a result of being folded in an envelope. Safely press the creases out by using the low setting on your iron. This way, you’ll avoid damaging your pattern pieces.

What happens if you cut fabric on the wrong side?

Fabric is usually folded right sides together for cutting. The only time it is cut right side out is if it has a design that must be taken into account and that does not show through to the wrong side. Fold the fabric as shown in the cutting layout on the pattern guide sheet.
