Why are gravel packs used in wells?
Gravel packs have a protective function to inhibit the flow of sand particulates into the well.
What is a gravel pack well?
1. n. [Well Completions] A sand-control method used to prevent production of formation sand. In gravel pack operations, a steel screen is placed in the wellbore and the surrounding annulus packed with prepared gravel of a specific size designed to prevent the passage of formation sand.
Why do oil wells need sand?
Frac sand plays an important role in the process of fracturing the shale to release natural gas, oil, and natural gas liquids from pores in the rock. When the high-pressure water stream forces the small perforations to become larger fractures, frac sand holds these fractures open to continue releasing fossil fuels.
