What is pulmonary pleura?
Your pleura is a large, thin sheet of tissue that wraps around the outside of your lungs and lines the inside of your chest cavity. Between the layers of the pleura is a very thin space. Normally it’s filled with a small amount of fluid.
What are the parts of the pleura?
There are two layers; the outer pleura (parietal pleura) is attached to the chest wall and the inner pleura (visceral pleura) covers the lungs and adjoining structures, via blood vessels, bronchi and nerves.
What are the two layers of the pleura?
The pleura includes two thin layers of tissue that protect and cushion the lungs. The inner layer (visceral pleura) wraps around the lungs and is stuck so tightly to the lungs that it cannot be peeled off. The outer layer (parietal pleura) lines the inside of the chest wall.
Is pleurisy considered a lung disease?
Pleurisy (PLOOR-ih-see) is a condition in which the pleura — two large, thin layers of tissue that separate your lungs from your chest wall — becomes inflamed. Also called pleuritis, pleurisy causes sharp chest pain (pleuritic pain) that worsens during breathing.
What makes up the outer layer of the pleura?
Pleura of the Lungs. The pleura includes two thin layers of tissue that protect and cushion the lungs. The inner layer (visceral pleura) wraps around the lungs and is stuck so tightly to the lungs that it cannot be peeled off.
Are there two types of pleura in the thoracic cavity?
The pleurae are two layers of serous membrane that form the boundaries of the pleural cavity. There are two types of pleura; parietal and visceral. The parietal pleura is the thicker and more durable outer layer that lines the inner aspect of the thoracic cavity and the mediastinum.
Parietal pleura The parietal pleura is the layer of pleura associated with the walls of the pleural cavity. It lines the internal aspect of the thoracic wall, the thoracic surface of the diaphragm and separates the pleural cavity from the mediastinum. The parietal pleura is divided into four parts.
What is the space between the pleurae called?
The pleurae are serous membranes which fold back onto themselves to form a two-layered membranous structure. The thin space between the two pleural layers is known as the pleural cavity and normally contains a small amount of pleural fluid.
