What is lead and how is it made?

What is lead and how is it made?

Lead is extracted out of different ores which are mined from underground mines. There are various ores containing some percentage of lead. However only three ores are usually mined in order to produce lead. The most common ore is Galena and this ore generally contains only lead and sulphur.

What is lead made from?

Lead (element #82, symbol Pb) is a very soft, blue-gray, metallic element. It is primarily produced from the mineral galena. It has been used since antiquity. Water pipes in ancient Rome, some of which still carry water, were made of lead.

Is lead natural or manmade?

Lead is a naturally occurring bluish-gray metal found in small amounts in the earth’s crust. Lead can be found in all parts of our environment. Much of it comes from human activities including burning fossil fuels, mining, and manufacturing. Lead has many different uses.

Where does lead originate from?

Lead can be found in all parts of our environment – the air, the soil, the water, and even inside our homes. Much of our exposure comes from human activities including the use of fossil fuels including past use of leaded gasoline, some types of industrial facilities and past use of lead-based paint in homes.

Is lead common?

Although lead makes up only about 0.0013% of the earth’s crust, it is not considered to be a rare element since it is easily mined and refined. Most lead is obtained by roasting galena in hot air, although nearly one third of the lead used in the United States is obtained through recycling efforts.

What is the molar mass of lead?

The molar mass of lead is 207.2- there is only one atom so you leave this number as it is. The molar mass of sulfur is 32.07- since there are two atoms, you multiply this number by 2.

How does lead form?

Like all elements heavier than iron on the periodic table, lead is formed in supernovas when stars bigger and hotter than the Sun explode at the end of their lives. Only the immense pressure of a supernova is strong enough to mash more than 26 protons together to make heavier elements.

What is the element of lead?

Lead (/ˈlɛd/) is a chemical element with the symbol Pb (from the Latin plumbum) and atomic number 82. It is a heavy metal that is denser than most common materials.
