Yes, I agree feelings can’t be controlled but our actions or our behavior can be controlled. Just because we are pissed at someone, it doesn’t mean we have to act upon it like punching someone on the face.

Why are thoughts and feelings important to US?

Thoughts and emotions are as important, maybe even more so, since they are the stimulus for our behaviors (and those eventual engrained habits). Granted, when our thoughts and feelings are accurately aligned with who we are and how we want to live in the world (i.e. our true self), all is fine.
